Saxophone

Languages of instruction: German, English

The saxophone is a hybrid: it borrowed its keys from the oboe, and its mouthpiece resembles that of the clarinet with a single reed, which is why the instrument, despite its metal body, belongs to the woodwind family. The sound of the saxophone was also intended to sit between these two instruments, as the Belgian Adolphe Sax (actually Antoine Joseph Sax) wrote in his patent application for the instrument on 21 March 1846. Adolphe Sax planned for the saxophone to be used in symphony orchestras as well as military music. However, the instrument never established itself in classical orchestras, but instead contributed to the triumph of jazz.

Whether jazz, rock, pop or classical music - the Saxophones can be found everywhere and in many sizes. In jazz in particular, the saxophone is „the“ instrument that should never be missed. Thanks to its gentle, very characteristic tone, the woodwind instrument has become more present in recent decades and enjoys ever-increasing popularity among musicians. Legends such as John Coltrane on the tenor saxophone or Charlie Parker on the alto saxophone show just how versatile the saxophone can be.

Frequently asked questions

  • Do you offer saxophone lessons for children?

Naturally! The joy of trying things out and discovering new things is our main focus. Especially with the saxophone, the children try out a lot at the beginning. How do I put my lips to the mouthpiece? How much pressure do I exert? How hard do I have to blow to get a sound out? And when have I bitten too hard and need a new reed? All of this is learnt intuitively in the first lesson through trial and error.

Our professional teachers are all trained in music education and incorporate technique and theory into their lessons in a child-orientated and didactically sensible way. Our teachers will also be happy to help you choose a suitable instrument of your own.

You can start directly if your child has already decided which instrument they would like to play. If your child is still unsure which instrument they would like to learn, we recommend attending the Instrument carousels.

  • Are there saxophone lessons for adults?

Would you like to take up playing the saxophone again? Or are you looking for a completely new hobby? In both cases, you are in good hands with our teachers. They will tailor their lessons to your musical wishes and abilities.

If, for professional or family reasons, you would prefer to come to lessons at longer intervals rather than weekly, we also have a solution for this: Our Prepaid cards. • Can I learn to play the saxophone with you as a beginner?

Even if you have no previous knowledge, this is not a problem. Getting started on the saxophone depends on your musical goals. A lack of previous knowledge is not an obstacle: most people manage to play their first notes relatively quickly and if you have good finger coordination, you can learn simple pieces quickly.

We pay attention to the correct position of the instrument and solid breathing technique, but we won't drill you until you don't feel like it anymore. With us, you'll be making music from the very first lesson!
